Once in a while I feel the need to do an article about bad information (or just downright wrong information) circulating about identity theft. Usually, this comes when I read (yet another) article that says "You don't need identity theft protection, just get your credit report every year."
I always try to give the benefit of the doubt to these folks, assuming they are just starting to look into identity theft and ways to protect their readers. But the fact is, oversimplification to this degree can leave most consumers at an even greater risk of identity theft.
Don't get me wrong, for some people, that advice is good enough. But when you understand the full scope of how identity theft can impact your life, the answer is never quite that black-and-white.
